Err...I don't know. Ask the scientists who invented the term. I'll email them and tell them there's a guy called "joe" who has a problem with their use of the word.

I stumbled upon your Blog by pure coinsidence. And I am very glad I did now! Great article and alot in it that I agree with you on.

I'm in The Libertarian Party UK, and if anyone ever described me as an Old School Conservative I think I may die. I am very much Liberal and NOT Conservative or right wing.

If ever you do want a civilised discussion or chat on Libertarianism, and possibly from a viewpoint you haven't seen, jump over to my blog and my Email Address is there.

Although I have not read this book yet, I have been over the same ground and agree with the fact that “orthodox” religions (which seem to be invariably based on faith rather than proven facts) have been and still are used as political tools. Now I consider there is sufficient entirely secular evidence to show that we continue existence after earthly death in another dimension and that if Richard Dawkins had been fortunate enough to have my experiences he would think the same. I fear Spiritualist churches are getting to share some of the same characteristics as the others such as lists of beliefs, but they do some good. We “survivalists” applaud Richard’s book in that it exposes organised religions for what they are, and we can’t grumble about his atheism. After all most of us were the same before something prodded us into investigating psychic happenings - it also happened to Sir William Crookes, and contemporaries Lord Balfour, Sir Wiliam Barrett, J J Thompson, Alfred Russell Wallace and Oliver Lodge, and later to numerous scientists such as Professor Archie Roy (U. of Glasgow) Professor Gary Schartz (U. of Arizona), and Professor David Fontana (Liverpool John Moores U.)

I think that it would be helpful if all atheists - busy as we all are with our worldly interests - at least looked at some of evidence, so that when they go through those legendary pearly gates they don’t get too much of a shock to find themselves about to start the rest of their lives. We hear of some very fanatical atheists who go to sleep for thousands of years after death.

By the way a NZ lawyer Victor Zammit has summarised the evidence for the afterlife in a book available on the Internet. code: A Lawyer Presents the Case for the Afterlife

An interesting read even for enthusiastic (but not fanatical) atheists.
